For 2017, thanks to Popcorn Octane Productions, there's one more event to pencil in: The Amelia Motoring Film Exhibition, taking place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, in downtown Fernandina Beach. The event will feature a trio of films sure to appeal to hard-core driving enthusiasts. The first, Climb Dance, is a five-minute short that recaptures the excitement of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 1988 and 1989, when the majority of the “Race to the Clouds” took place on dirt and gravel, sans guard rails. Produced by Peugeot, directed by Jean Louis Mourney and recently remastered in high-definition, the sometimes heart-stopping clip has been described as “the benchmark for modern automotive filmmakers.” Next up is The Red Grifo, a 20-minute film produced and directed by Guy Smith that recounts the impact of a Corvette-powered, Giugiaro-styled, Bizzarrini-designed Iso Grifo across generations of a family. Released in 2016, the critically acclaimed film (also from Popcorn Octane Productions) has been selected for screening at the 2016 London Motor Film Festival, the 2016 Charlotte Film Festival and the 2017 Beaufort International Film Festival. Finally, the night is capped off by a screening of Adam Carolla’s 2016 documentary, The 24-Hour War, which tells the story of the epic battle between Ferrari and Ford at Le Mans in the mid-1960s. The opening salvo was fired by Enzo Ferrari, who, after being told he would not be in control of Ferrari’s racing efforts, walked away from an already-inked deal to sell his company to Henry Ford II. Enraged, Ford ordered his company to construct a car that would best Ferrari on one of racing’s grandest stages. The result was the Ford GT40, which would put an end to Ferrari’s long-standing dominance on the Circuit de la Sarthe, eventually becoming one of the most iconic endurance racing cars of the 20th century.
Other films may be added at the discretion of event organizers. The Amelia Motoring Film Exhibition will take place at the Amelia Community Theater, located at 207 Cedar Street in Fernandina Beach, Florida. The evening begins with a reception at 6:00, followed by the screenings at 7:00. Tickets are $20; for more information, or to purchase tickets, visit AmeliaMotoringFilmExhibition.com.

Thursday evening March 9 to rev-up the Concours weekend! The 24-Hour War showcases the famous battle between automotive giants Ferrari and Ford as they went head-to-head in the 1960’s on racing’s biggest stage – Le Mans. The Red Grifo finds a home amongst the well documented show field at Amelia by chronicling the journey of one man to reconnect with his late father through their shared passion for a rare Italian touring car that boasts the signatures of Bizzarrini and Giugiaro. Sprinkle in Peugeot’s epic short film Climb Dance, a riveting ride to the top of Pikes Peak in the late 80s, and auto aficionados and film buffs alike are sure to walk away from the theater with a smile. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at http://www.AmeliaMotoringFilmExhibition.com Movie trailers and films summaries at http://www.AmeliaMotoringFilmExhibition.com Endurance Icon Hurley Haywood gives a glimpse into his work ethic, his relationship with Brumos, and a short history on three iconic Porsche sports cars from the Brumos collection: Porsche 917/10 Can-Am, 911 RSR, and Peter Gregg's Championship winning 935. You don't become America's most decorated endurance driver in history by taking the easy route. Approaching the 1977 24 Hours of Daytona racing legend Hurley Haywood was faced with such a dilemma. Should he conform to the new generation of Porsche Turbos that came to compete or should he stick with the tried-and-true, however severely out horse powered, Porsche 911 RSR. Haywood, who we filmed with during the Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance and Savannah Speed Classic, tells us "The turbo cars were something I felt were unproven." But when his #43 RSR qualified at the rear of the field Haywood really began doubting his chances of success. "I thought, what have you done?". Once the green flag dropped the competition started having reliability issues. As Haywood found himself piloting for an eight-hour stint at night the #43 RSR rose to the top of the scoring pylon - and never looked back. During the Savannah Speed Classic, which is a full weekend of Historic SportsCar Racing sanctioned races, Haywood was behind the wheel of a modern Porsche GT3 Cup two-seater giving hot lap rides to spectators. A few days later he took on the role of Honorary Chairman for the Concours d'Elegance. "This is my first time judging at Hilton Head … I've done the Speed Classic down in Savannah for a number of years but my first time here at Hilton Head and its really a nice venue, the manufactures really support it, the fans, and it's in a beautiful area." Brumos Porsche, whom Haywood has been associated with for most of his career, fielded three legendary Porsches from their collection including his Daytona winning Porsche 911 RSR along with the Can-Am championship winning Porsche 917/10 and Peter Gregg's championship winning Porsche 935. In our short film, “Endurance Icon: Hurley Haywood”, Haywood gives us a brief history and some insight into these race cars. While Haywood claims to have retired from racing he shows no signs of letting off of the gas. |
